Great Things From Small Beginnings...

January 1st, 2013

This is my first attempt at blogging; honestly I am not sure where this will go or what it will become.  I am initially thinking it will be a medium for me to put my thoughts on paper about life - fatherhood, career, school, husband-hood, etc.

I guess the first thing I want to start talking about with the new year is the stereotypical "new year resolutions".  One of the resolutions I have made for 2013 is to tackle more home projects.  Not big major ones - small single day or single weekend projects.  I have a collection of some I want to start with, but the first I am calling "Operation Drafty".

We have a wood burning fireplace that has an awful draft in the winter months.  So we thought that when not in use, it would be good have a cover that we can use to block the draft when the fireplace is not in use.

So I did a little research and the initial design follows a basic pattern of a wooden backing, foam insert as a the insulator with fabric over the top.  A neat trick I find was to include hardware on the front (like a drawer knob) to make installing and removing very easy.

Then I thought about the location in the living room - it's right where Bean likes to play.  Then i got an idea from looking at the wife's Pintrest board - make the outer layer a felt board!  Then the board itself can be one more place for Nate to play.  Simple, easy and fun!

Basic design is like this:

What I am pulling from for inspiration is this picture from 8foot6.blogspot.com:

I'm going to do a little more research, but the wheels are definitely in motion.  Until next time.
